Newcastle United’s summer surplus is available to spend in January, according to the Chronicle.
The newspaper revealed on their website that the Magpies were forced into spending £2.4million in hidden costs because of a 4% Premier League levy on each deal every club conducts.
The Chronicle have reported that despite that money taking a chunk out of the transfer budget, Steve Bruce will still have a sum available for him to use in the winter window.
Factoring in agent fees and the levy to the Premier League in all deals, Newcastle’s total outlay for the summer transition was reported at £75million.
OPINION
This will be music to the ears of Bruce, who will be desperate to continue his transformation of this Magpies’ squad. After losing both Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon, and injuries at the beginning of this campaign, Newcastle look weak in the attacking third, and January could be the perfect time to strengthen. The major positive of the summer was that Mike Ashley finally seemed less reluctant to part with his cash and give Bruce the means to add his own spin to the squad. After only one window though, surely the Magpies’ boss will need another couple of windows to finalise the side he envisaged when taking over at St James’ Park. Hidden costs or not, the £2.4million is pennies for a Premier League side, and Ashley should prepare himself to sanction many more deals in the future if he is sticking around for the long-haul. It is all part and parcel of the transfer window for all squads, and all Bruce will care about is whether or not he will be given funds to push on in January.
