OPINION

Newcastle United left wing back Jetro Willems suffered through a below-par performance for his team in their goalless draw with Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday. It was a desperate display from the Magpies as a whole, with many of Steve Bruce’s players appearing to have little idea of what they were supposed to be doing or where they were supposed to be playing. Never was that more true than with Willems, who shuffled around between the left hand side of the defence and the centre of the midfield. Bruce didn’t know what to do with him, and the Dutchman was eventually withdrawn for returning hero Andy Carroll. As per WhoScored.com, the 25-year-old made just 20 passes on Saturday, the fourth fewest of any Magpies starter. He also had a massive three unsuccessful touches of the ball, while making just one tackle, one interception and committing a foul. His overall WhoScored rating for the game was a woeful 6.29. It wasn’t a great performance from him, and the Newcastle fans were clearly disappointed by him.
