OPINION

You get the impression that if Newcastle United are to dig their way out of the hole that they currently find themselves in this season, they are going to have to rely on a handful of big characters.

The Magpies lie 17th in the Premier League table after just one win in their opening six matches of the season, and Saturday’s dire 0-0 draw against Brighton was hardly cause for optimism.

One man who did produce a moment of magic in that match, however, was Fabian Schar.

The Swiss international was on hand to pull of a remarkable goal line clearance in acrobatic fashion, and ultimately ended up winning his side a point.

And his efforts have not gone unnoticed.

Schar now occupies 46th position in Sky Sports’ Premier League power rankings, and is the only Toon player on the list.

And that just emphasises how significant he is for Steve Bruce’s men.

So far this season, Schar has averaged 2.7 tackles, 2.5 interceptions, and four clearances per game in the Premier League, as per Whoscored.

Consistently, he has been a steady and ferocious presence at the back, and the Toon Army look much better for having him in the back four.

The fact that he is mixing it with some of the best players in the division shows just how well he has developed since moving to England in the summer of 2018.

Schar is a top class defender, and a credit to the Magpies, and the hope will be that he stays on Tyneside for a while to come.
