Neil Redfearn wants to replicate previous academy success at Newcastle United, according to the Chronicle.

The former Leeds academy manager started his role at the Magpies at the beginning of the season and has insisted he can produce players similar to Paul Dummett and Sean Longstaff.

He said, “I am vastly experienced in developing players – and we will get it right.”

Newcastle selected Redfearn to take over their under-23s after his continued success at nurturing youth talent at Leeds’ academy and eventually their first-team.

Despite only being at the club for a matter of months, Redfearn was placed in caretaker charge of the senior side after the departure of Rafael Benitez and helped bring young players into the set up like Matty Longstaff.

OPINION

Redfearn will be remembered in the highest esteem if he can succeed in bringing more players through like Dummett and Longstaff. That is the ultimate goal for any academy, to produce players that are capable of making the jump to the senior side who could be available at any given time. The former Leeds man helped produce many players who are now starring in the Premier League from the Yorkshire side such as Bournemouth’s Lewis Cook and Burnley’s Charlie Taylor. Sometimes all players need is the exposure to prove themselves, and that can ultimately be pivotal in their development. The younger Longstaff brother made his full senior debut against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup, and will still have his part to play in certain games for the under-23s this season, but will also feature for the first-team throughout the campaign. Consistent football can sometimes be better than sitting on the bench every single weekend, and Redfearn’s first success for the senior side could be the young midfielder.
