Michael Owen has predicted that Liverpool will win 2-0 against Newcastle United when two of his former clubs meet at Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
Steve Bruce’s side are unbeaten in their last two matches after beating Tottenham and drawing against struggling Watford while Liverpool are the only top-flight side still to have a 100 per cent record.
Owen expects the Merseyside club to extend their winning run this weekend, claiming that Newcastle’s failure to win at Anfield since the mid-1990s is one of the main reasons.
“Kevin Keegan was Newcastle boss the last time United won at Anfield in the Premier League – April 1994 – and it is hard to make a case for them against this current Liverpool side who have won their last 13 league games – a record for the club,” Owen said on the BetVictor website.
“Yes, the Magpies did win at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in their last league game on the road but, as good as Spurs are, they are not Liverpool and I expect the Reds to make it 14 successive league wins. Do note they have scored at least twice on each occasion in this record-breaking sequence.”

It is really hard to see anything but a Liverpool win this weekend when the European champions welcome Newcastle to Merseyside. Although Bruce’s men will be a lot more well-rested than Jurgen Klopp’s due to the number of players each team has had away on international duty, it is bound to be a victory for the Reds this weekend. Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane have all been in superb form while Newcastle have struggled to break teams down and will be without key players like Matt Ritchie and Allan Saint-Maximin due to injury. Liverpool’s squad does not have issues like that but there is a good chance Klopp might rotate things due to most of his players being away on international duty. That might be why a 2-0 prediction, like Owen’s, is realistic. Liverpool probably won’t romp to victory but they will no doubt be comfortable for most of the game.
