OPINION

Newcastle United welcomed Brighton to St James’ Park on Saturday evening desperate for three points but had to settle for a 0-0 draw. Both teams sat in the bottom five of the Premier League before kick-off, and there only looked like one team winning it for the majority of the clash. The Magpies were lacklustre for the majority of the game as the Seagulls dominated possession for most of the game. Steve Bruce stuck with Miguel Almiron as a striker despite having Andy Carroll and Allan Saint-Maximin on the bench, and the Paraguayan disappointed once more. The 25-year-old has yet to be involved in a single goal for the club despite Saturday’s game being his 16th in the North East, and he really should have opened his account. Almiron found space in the 18-yard box and fired straight at Mat Ryan in the Brighton goal, as his first for the club went begging. That has been the theme of his season so far, with the South American only averaging 1.2 shots on goal per game according to WhoScored, not enough for a player who is supposed to be providing the goals. Many Newcastle fans slammed Almiron for his performance against Brighton on Twitter, with the majority questioning whether he will ever score a goal for the Magpies.
