Newcastle United are in the hunt to sign new wingers in January and Steve Bruce has been given the “green light” to splash the cash on reinforcing that area of his squad, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that Sevilla attacker Rony Lopes is someone who the Magpies are hot on the heels of, even though he only joined Sevilla from Monaco midway through last month.

French newspaper L’Equipe reported via their print edition on August 3 [page 10] that Newcastle were interested in signing Lopes, 23, before he left Monaco to head to La Liga.

OPINION

Lopes has had a slow start to life at Sevilla, earning just one, 11-minute-long, appearance off the bench for the Spanish side in the three matches they have played since his arrival from Monaco. Lopes came off the bench in the 1-1 draw against Celta Vigo before the international break but because he is a new summer signing, it is more than likely that he is being eased into playing for his new club, rather than being overlooked by the manager. It would surely be hard for Newcastle to sign Lopes in January based on the fact that Sevilla have only recently signed the Brazil-born attacker, who has earned two caps for Portugal. However a lot can happen between now and the winter so it is still probably worth Newcastle keeping an eye on the former Monaco man, just in case there is a window of opportunity where they can snare him away from Sevilla, potentially on loan.
