Newcastle United haven’t exactly started the season in prolific form in front of goal.
The Magpies have only managed to score four times in the league, and have not yet scored more than one goal in a single fixture in the Premier League.
Summer signing, Joelinton, scored the winner against Tottenham before the international break but has struggled with his efficiency in the final third – failing to add to his single strike.
Things aren’t much better next door to him, with his partner, Miguel Almiron, not having found the back of the net since his arrival in January from Atlanta.
Steve Bruce will know if his side are to survive in the Premier League this season they need to find goals from a consistent source, and so far, that has failed to materialise.
Yoshinori Muto is the only option that Bruce has had to call upon from the bench in games so far, and the Japanese international is far from the answer having only scored twice in his 23 games for the Magpies.
What Bruce needs right now is a forward who is a natural goalscorer, and can come in and make a real difference when needed too.
Football Insider have reported on Friday morning that Dwight Gayle is set to return to action at the beginning of October after suffering a calf injury in pre-season.
The reputable football outlet have claimed that the 28-year-old is in the final stages of his rehabilitation and is set to give Bruce a big boost at St James’ Park.
Bruce will no doubt be delighted with that news, after admitting to the Chronicle that he was desperate to utilise the forward back in August.
Coming off the back of an impressive season on loan at West Brom, in which he scored 24 goals in 41 appearances, the 28-year-old will be eager to prove himself in the Premier League this season.
Gayle is a natural goalscorer, something Bruce is crying out for right now.
The Magpies’ boss will be delighted at the news, as he will finally get the chance to use Gayle in a move which could bring big rewards for his Newcastle side.
