Shola Ameobi questioned the performance of Newcastle United attacker Miguel Almiron in the 0-0 draw with Brighton.

The former Magpies forward pointed out that the Paraguayan forward should have scored against the Seagulls and claimed that he thought currently that Almiron flattered to deceive when in front of goal.

Ameobi even claimed that when he had watched Almiron in training that the attacker was scoring the sort of chances that he ended up not converting in the 0-0 draw with the Seagulls.

“This is probably the one time where we put together two or three passes to be in, and you look at him (Almiron), I watch him in training slide them in,” stated Ameobi (Sky Sports Premier League, 19:49, Saturday, September 21st).

“It looks like a guy who is just desperate to score…he does great here again coming down the side, but again he just flatters to deceive when he gets in front of goal.

“And I think that’s the one thing, he just needs that confidence from getting his first goal, then the floodgates will open for him.”

OPINION

It’s hard not to feel sorry for Almiron. The 25-year-old once again failed to register an assist or hit the back of the net against Brighton, and you just have no faith that his luck is going to change anytime soon. Almiron had two attempts at goal on Saturday and both his efforts didn’t trouble the keeper. The 25-year-old managed to touch the ball only 24 times and was careless in possession as only 30% of his passes found their mark (Source: WhoScored). When Almiron is failing to score but putting in a good performance, for example, he ran Tottenham ragged in the 1-0 over them, you can see why Steve Bruce continues to keep playing him, but after Saturday’s display, it was hard to find something positive to say. Hopefully the 25-year-old is able to turn his luck at St James Park around in the near, otherwise, you get that feeling that it may never quite work out for the attacker at St James Park as there’s no way he will ever be confident enough to deliver the goods.
