Newcastle United are “gearing up” for activity in the January transfer window, according to Chronicle journalist Mark Douglas.

The Magpies broke their transfer record over the summer for Brazilian forward Joelinton, but Douglas expects them to be busy again in the winter window.

Writing in a Q&A for the Chronicle (15.48), he said: “Well they are gearing up to do something.

“The first meetings with the scouting team have taken place and United still have some money left over from the summer – not a huge amount, we think less than £20million.

“It’ll depend on where they are in the Premier League table but they’ll see what’s out there, even if they’re in a strong-ish position.”

OPINION

This will be music to fans’ ears. Even though Steve Bruce was given the opportunity to bring in some players over the summer, everything did feel a little bit rushed, and there was certainly an impression that given more time and funds, the new boss would probably have recruited more heavily. One player who might be an option is Jarred Bowen from Hull City, who has been linked with the Magpies for some time, as reported by the Express. The young winger has enjoyed a fine start to the Championship season, and has averaged 3.7 shots, 2.3 successful dribbles, and 1.2 key passes per game, as per Whoscored, as well as three goals in his first six matches. If he could be lured in from the Tigers, then he could provide a valuable midseason boost for Bruce’s men in the winter window, bringing a new dimension and inventiveness to their attacking roster.
