Both Michael Chopra and Owen have not had the best of summers in terms of their relationship with everyone involved at Newcastle United.

It started with the so-called Newcastle fan, Chopra, coming out and launching an attack on new boss Steve Bruce and his methods after he guided the club to consecutive defeats in his first two games in charge back in the Premier League.

Chopra claimed to talkSPORT that players didn’t know what they were doing in training as Bruce didn’t work on his shape, and that led to the evident confusion on the pitch on matchdays.

“Bruce has come in, and some of the players don’t know their jobs – they are not really working on their shape,” he said.

To no surprise, after the Magpies picked up four points in the two games before the international break against Tottenham and Watford, Chopra disappeared and didn’t make any further comments.

Following that was Owen, who claimed in his new book, as relayed by the Chronicle, that he saw his move to Newcastle as a step-down, and went on to call the fans “deluded.”

Chopra, an admirer of the spotlight in the North East, responded when speaking to the Shields Gazette, revealing how he believes Owen is simply wrong.

“For him to come out and criticise Newcastle United fans and owners thinking we’re 10% better than what we are … we don’t,” he said.

“I respect everything he did in the game and how he tried to help me become a better player. I can’t disrespect the guy, because he tried to help me as a footballer. But I’ll disrespect him for what he’s saying about Newcastle United fans.”

The former Newcastle forward’s remarks only reveal his urge to be in the Newcastle spotlight, and using Owen as a shield to protect himself will surely be overlooked by fans.
