Newcastle United forward Andy Carroll is set to miss the upcoming clash against Liverpool, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claim on their website that despite the Magpies being hopeful of a second-debut for Carroll, the 30-year-old has yet to prove his full fitness in training.

The Daily Mail reports that a return is not imminent for the forward, and any chances of an appearance against his former club are “extremely unlikely.”

As of the international break, Carroll had yet to return to full first-team training under Steve Bruce, and the upcoming trip to Leicester City has been labelled as a more realistic target.

OPINION

Bruce will definitely be disappointed that he won’t have Carroll to call upon for the upcoming game against the Reds. Last season, the one trait that caused Liverpool so many problems was the physicality of Salomon Rondon, and the reintroduction of Carroll could have transformed the game. The 30-year-old has struggled for fitness consistently in past seasons but still manages to leave his mark on each game he plays. Last season, Carroll won an average of 9.1 aerial duels per 90 minutes he played for West Ham according to WhoScored – something that could have caused defenders such as Virgil van Dijk real problems. Newcastle are crying out for fresh attacking options to bring off the bench right now, with Dwight Gayle and Allan Saint-Maximin also injured, there is a large amount of pressure on a select few players to deliver the goods in such a high-profile game against the Champions League winners. Newcastle know they will be on the back foot in the game, and the introduction of Carroll could have given them the option to go long for him to try and relieve pressure.
