Newcastle United head coach Steve Bruce has claimed that Magpies managing director Lee Charnley runs the club ‘fantastically well’.

Charnley isn’t particularly popular with the Toon Army, who appear to view him as a puppet of owner Mike Ashley. Bruce, however, thinks he’s doing a terrific job.

“I’m perfectly fine with it,” he said, as per the Shields Gazette, in regards to takeover talk. “It’s fair to say Lee Charnley runs the club on a day-to-day basis.

“We have regular contact. That’s every day, twice a day. I’m fine with it. The club’s run fantastically well through Lee.”

OPINION

There will be plenty of Newcastle fans who disagree strongly with Bruce’s assertion that Charnley runs the club ‘fantastically well’. He’s certainly not the most popular figure on Tyneside, but he is undoubtedly the man who pulls the strings at St James’ Park on a day-to-day basis, as Bruce says. To be fair, it’s good that he is in regular contact with the head coach, because they are the two most important men at the football club at this moment in time. They need to be in sync and working as a cohesive unit. It seems like that is the case. Whether that was true of Charnley’s relationship with former boss Rafael Benitez is unknown, but you have to assume that the Spaniard wasn’t speaking to the managing director twice a day. With the club in complete stasis, largely down to Ashley, it must be said, can Bruce really claim that Charnley runs the Magpies fantastically well? Apparently he can, but it doesn’t look like the most thought-out statement at the moment.
