Newcastle United definitely gave a good account of themselves on Saturday despite their 3-1 defeat at Anfield against Liverpool.
The Magpies took the lead against the Premier League table-toppers when defender Jetro Willems cut inside onto his right foot and fired an unstoppable drive into the top corner.
It didn’t last long though, as two goals from Sadio Mane and a third from Mohamed Salah secured all three points for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Mistakes ultimately cost the Magpies, as Christian Atsu gave the ball away cheaply, and keeper Martin Dubravka hesitated to collect a through ball for Mane’s second goal in the game.
Atsu has come out and apologised for his role in that goal, admitting he knew if they made mistakes they would get punished against Liverpool.
“We were in the game – we scored one,” he told the Shields Gazette.
“Then it was unfortunate that I gave the ball away. The second goal was very crucial in this game. I can only apologise to the players and also the fans.”
“They’re a top team. We knew that. Against these teams, when you make a mistake, you’re going to get punished.”
Steve Bruce will have been happy with his side’s performance and will be hoping to use that game as motivation for the important clash against Brighton and Hove Albion at St James’ Park.
Atsu has no need to apologise for his part in Liverpool’s second goal, with his performances since returning from injury vital for the Magpies.
The Ghanaian international has been one of Newcastle’s standout performers in the opening couple of months, delivering two assists already in his three appearances.
The 27-year-old has completed 2.7 dribbles on average per game so far, as well as completing three key passes according to WhoScored – the most in both departments in the entire Magpies’ squad.
Atsu has no need to apologise for a singular mistake, and if he continues to excel going forward, that mishap will be left in the past.
