BBC Newcastle pundit John Anderson was impressed with what he saw from Luke Charman and Osin McEntee despite Newcastle United’s Under-21s suffering a 2-1 defeat against Macclesfield’s first-team on Tuesday night.

Neil Redfearn’s side kicked off their EFL Trophy campaign with a loss at the Moss Rose, although there were positives to take home from Cheshire as Charman, 21, scored a superb curled effort from the edge of the penalty area.

Ex-Newcastle player Anderson also praised centre-back McEntee, 18, for his role in the midweek defeat.

“Second half was better and they got back into it with a cracking goal from Charman. It’s been good experience for them and they’ve done all right. I thought McEntee did well and the back and Charman was a handful,” said Anderson, as quoted by BBC Newcastle commentator Matthew Raisbeck via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday night.

OPINION

Charman, at the age of 21, may be at the point where we will have to accept getting into the Newcastle first-team is going to be tough. Although he scored a good goal against Macclesfield in the EFL Cup defeat on Tuesday, the striker has only made four senior appearances in his career so far and all four of them came when he spent the first half of last season on loan at Accrington Stanley. McEntee, though, is someone who Newcastle fans might want to keep an eye on after he impressed Anderson in the loss at the Moss Rose. McEntee is only 18-years-old but has already started to break into Redfearn’s Under-23s squad by playing twice in Premier League 2 this season before he was sent off in the 2-1 loss to West Ham last month. The USA-born centre-back is an Under-19 international for the Republic of Ireland and despite that dismissal last month, looks to be someone who is on the right tracks at Newcastle. Hopefully we can see more of him in the coming years.
