Sheffield Wednesday are confident of winning the race to borrow Newcastle United attacker Jacob Murphy following talks in recent hours, according to Football Insider.

The reliable football outlet claim that there are growing expectations that Murphy will be a Sheffield Wednesday player for the 2019/20 campaign by tomorrow evening barring any unexpected hurdle.

Football Insider report the Yorkshire club have edged out Derby County, Huddersfield and Fulham in the bid to land the Magpies winger, with them now sat in pole position.

OPINION

Murphy going on loan is his best-case scenario as he needs regular playing time in order to prove himself, and following the arrival of Allan-Saint Maximin, there’s no guarantee he’ll get many games under Steve Bruce at St James Park. The 24-year-old had a disappointing 2018/19 campaign, and he can’t afford to have another season follow suit. Murphy managed only nine Premier League appearances, registering one assist, before joining West Bromwich Albion on loan. While at the Baggies, Murphy struggled to show what he is capable of. The Magpies managed only two goals and one goal in 15 outings for the Championship side, and only completed 90 minutes on four occasions for them. Murphy only had a pass completion rate of 65.1% across his outings for WBA, and that suggests he was sloppy in possession (Source: WhoScored). Given that Murphy couldn’t wow at West Brom while playing at a level below the Premier League, it’s highly unlikely he’ll be useful to Bruce this season, all he can do is make the most of his potential loan move this season, so his first-team chances at the Magpies improve by the time next summer comes around.
