Rob Lee opted to defend Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce ahead of the clash with Tottenham and his remarks won’t have comforted many Magpies supporters.

The former Newcastle midfielder originally took to his personal Twitter account to urge Magpies fans, not to keep have ago at Bruce and instead remember who the real villain was, that being club owner Mike Ashley.

Lee, to his credit, then took the time to reply to fans who had an issue with his tweet.

One Magpies supporters told Lee that Bruce would relegate the club and that his appointment was a sad reflection of Ashley’s ownership, before making it clear they wouldn’t accept him as Newcastle boss just because he was a Geordie.

Lee then defended Bruce once again, but in a way that will have many Newcastle fans fearing the worst about their side this season.

The former Magpies midfielder didn’t deny that the Magpies would be relegated but instead stated the Magpies could end up dropping into the Championship due to lacking of good players and because of the lack of investment into the playing squad rather than Bruce.

“He won’t relegate us ,… the lack of finance and good players will !!” wrote Lee, via his Twitter account.

Given that Lee knows what it takes to excel in the Premier League, he appeared 280 times in the division after all (Source: Premier League), then if he thinks the Magpies’ squad aren’t good enough, then it’s hard not to take notice.

This is especially the case when you consider the retired midfielder doesn’t ideally want to think of Newcastle getting relegated due to his connection to the club.

The Magpies have lost their opening two games of the season, they lost 1-0 to Arsenal before suffering a 3-1 defeat courtesy of Norwich City, and their next encounter sees them face Champions League runners-up Tottenham, a side they’ve lost their last four matches with (Source: 11vs11.com).

Newcastle also were disappointing against Norwich not just because of the result, but because of their performance.

The Magpies only saw 38% of the ball against the Canaries and only four of their 12 attempts of the goal hit the target, as per the BBC, and that hardly is enough evidence to dismiss Lee’s suggestion that the Magpies are relegation-bound.

Given that the worst-case scenario this season for many Newcastle fans will be to see their side suffer relegation once again, you feel Lee’s defence of Bruce inadvertently will have them fearing the worst.
