Carlisle United manager Steve Pressley raved about Newcastle United youngster Elias Sorensen after he made his Carlisle debut in the 2-0 defeat to Mansfield on Saturday.

The 19-year-old Magpies forward is spending his 2019/20 season on loan with the League Two side, and made his Carlisle debut after being brought on as a substitute in the 56th minute of their latest outing.

Despite Sorensen failing to spark his side back into life upon entering the game, Pressley heaped praise on the Magpies teenager after the game and revealed he was confident that he could aid the team.

“I hope he will bring goals, and he’ll bring a movement in behind. I think he’s very effective,” said Pressley, as quoted by the News and Star.

“Unfortunately [on Saturday] with the way Mansfield set up, they tried to kill the space in behind so we didn’t manage to quite utilise him in behind.

“It was good to get him on and we hoped he could provide us with the impact we wanted.

“It wasn’t the case but I’m sure we’ll see a lot more of him in the coming weeks.

“I think he’ll bring a real threat behind and he’s a real goalscorer.”

Sorensen got his first taste of League 2 action, and based on his manager’s comments he should be prepared to face Cheltenham on Tuesday as it seems like his new boss has high hopes for him. Newcastle tried to aid the teenager’s development last season by loaning him out to League One side Blackpool in January, but that move didn’t pan out. Sorensen made only one appearance for Blackpool, he played 32 minutes of their 2-2 draw with Wycombe (Source: Transfermarkt), and it’s safe to say he didn’t likely learn much from his brief stint at the League One club. However given that Pressley is publicly praising the Magpies youngster and has already utilised him, then it seems like his spell at Carlisle will go a lot better. It’s up to Sorensen to make the most of his opportunity and return to Steve Bruce’s side a better player. The 19-year-old clearly has something about him as not only did he feature for the Magpies in pre-season, but his goal record for Newcastle’s youth sides speaks for itself. Sorenson has scored 15 goals in 34 outings for the Magpies’ U-18s, and has racked up 16 goals in 26 matches for the U-23s.
