Newcastle never looked at Austin

Newcastle United didn’t look at signing Southampton forward Charlie Austin, according to Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie.

The Sky reporter stated that with Austin in talks with Championship side West Bromwich Albion over joining them, it puts to bed any speculation he could come to Newcastle.

However, Downie quickly made clear that as he understood it, Austin wasn’t someone the Magpies looked at signing anyway.

“Charlie Austin in talks with WBA puts to bed any speculation he could come to Newcastle. Understand he wasn’t one they looked at anyway,” wrote Downie on his verified Twitter account.

OPINION

Sky Sports previously reported that Newcastle had enquired about getting Austin from Southampton, with Football Insider reporting that the Magpies were plotting a bid to sign the forward. Yet with Downie stating that Austin is in talks with West Brom, it seems not only are the chances of Austin arriving at St James Park before the window shuts slim, a move was never really in the pipeline for him. The 30-year-old would have been an uninspiring signing to make, given he managed only two goals in 25 Premier League appearances last season, but if he was available on loan then he would beeen acceptable cover. After all, the main issue with Austin has always been his injuries issues. The 30-year-old has had reoccurring issues with his hamstrings, as per Transfermarket, throughout his career so there’s always a question mark over how many games you can get out him. However Austin has proven himself in the Premier League previously, he has scored 34 goals in 106 outings in England’s top-flight and may have done well coming off the bench. Yet it seems the 30-year-old will be returning to the Championship for the coming season, he previously scored an impressive 66 goals in 129 outings in the second-tier, and it will likely turn out to be a smart decision to drop down a division.
