Many Newcastle United fans were thrilled over a report by The Times that claimed the Magpies were in talks with midfielder Sean Longstaff about giving him a new deal. The national newspaper claimed that the 21-year-old could expect to earn a wage similar to Jonjo Shelvey if he agrees to a new deal, as his new contract could be worth in the region of £80,000-a-week. While that seems like a lot of money to pay a 21-year-old who has only made 14 appearances for the first-team, that didn’t stop many Newcastle fans being happy that the club were trying to give the player a bumper new deal. One Newcastle fan pointed out £80,000-a-week was the going rate for quality midfielders, while another claimed it was amazing news and that they personally hoped the deal was a six-year contract that had no release clause. Based on this, it’s easy to see that the North Shields-born midfielder has already wiggled his way into the hearts of supporters, and it’ll be interesting to see how he does this season. Longstaff struggled in his team’s opener against Arsenal as he achieved only a rating of 6.30 with only 69.2% of his passes finding their mark (Source: WhoScored), and if wants to keeps fans on his side, then he needs to up his game.
