Clinton Morrison described Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce as a wheeler and dealer based on his experience of working with him.

The now-retired attacker previously played for Bruce at Crystal Palace before the manager opted to sign him when in charge of Birmingham City.

Jim White opted to ask Morrison for his thoughts on the Magpies’ transfer dealings and Morrison responded by providing some insight on how Bruce works.

The pundit stated that Bruce was a wheeler and dealer who is capable of bringing two or three bodies through the door after previously saying there is nothing on the cards.

“Yeah, definitely but I’ve worked under Steve Bruce, he is a wheeler and a dealer,” said Morrison on talkSPORT (11:11am, Wednesday, August 7th).

“Brucey will tell you he is doing nothing then two or three bodies will come through the door.”

A wheeler and dealer is someone who is canny regarding their business, someone who is going to drive for the hardest bargain possible and someone who is more often than not going to grab themselves a bargain.

Under previous Magpies boss, Rafa Benitez, Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley seemed reluctant to open his wallet.

After all, by the time the last summer window ended, the Magpies in the previous two years had only spent £10million+ on a single player three times. (Source: Sky Sports)

This saw the Magpies bucking the trend, as other Premier League clubs constantly broke their transfers records in this period, and it seemed to be a point of frustration for Benitez as he appeared from the outside not to make the type of signings he wanted.

While the Magpies did spend £20million on Miguel Almiron in January, the fact Benitez left the club, seemed rather telling and it’s hard not to believe the club’s recent transfer business didn’t play a part.

However, Bruce upon succeeding Benitez confirmed he was no puppet for Ashley and would have the “final say” on transfers. (Source: Chronicle)

Eyebrows were surely raised as if Benitez couldn’t get his way with the Newcastle owner on transfers, why would Bruce, but Morrison’s remarks show why Ashley likely trusts him.

Bruce is a man after his own heart and will strive to root the bargain bin for gems in order to get the players he wants.

While Bruce’s reign has seen Newcastle spend £40million on Joelinton, as per the BBC, which is a respectable amount, perhaps the alternatives to him were significantly pricier.

Yet it’s hard to doubt Morrison’s view of Bruce after working with him on two occasions, and perhaps the manager is about to have an excellent working relationship with Ashley.
