Newcastle United goalkeeper Nathan Harker could make his debut for Blyth Spartans this weekend after joining them on loan.

The Magpies’ official website confirmed that the 6ft 3in tall shot-stopper (Source: Transfermarkt) could make his debut for Lee Clark’s side in their opening league game of the season on Saturday against Gloucester City after signing for them on loan until January 2020.

Harker has never featured for the Magpies’ senior side in a competitive game but did make his debut for the first-team in a 1-1 draw with Royal Antwerp in a friendly in 2018.

OPINION

Harker has never been loaned out by the Magpies’ before and it seems a wise decision to send him to Blyth. You feel not only will Harker have a solid chance of regular first-team football at the National League North outfit but Clark will be helpful for the player’s development. After all, Clark knows all about what it takes to make it at St James Park after his playing days. The Blyth Spartans manager played over 200 times across two spells with the Magpies and will no doubt be able to advise Harker in a fantastic way due to this. Also when you consider that Harker is only on loan until January 2020, perhaps it suggests the club has a plan in place for him, as normally the club normally seals season-long loans for its youngsters. It’s likely that if the 20-year-old proves himself at Blyth then another English club from a higher league may borrow his services for the second half of the season. The 20-year-old has conceded 68 goals in 38 appearances for the Magpies’ U-23s in his career thus far, while keeping nine clean sheets, and will no doubt be looking not to pick the ball out of his back so often in the upcoming campaign.
