Andy Goldstein revealed that he is baffled by Newcastle United signing Andy Carroll in the summer window.

The talkSPORT host when touching on the subject of the Magpies shared that he didn’t understand why Steve Bruce’s side had signed the forward, and questioned whether it was done just to make fans happy.

“I don’t get the Andy Carroll signing, is it just to make fans happy?” said Goldstein on talkSPORT (15:04, Tuesday, August 13th).

The Magpies’ official website confirmed on transfer deadline day that the 30-year-old had signed an initial one-year contract with the club in order to return to his boyhood club after an eight-year absence.

OPINION

Goldstein likely isn’t the only person baffled over Newcastle signing Carroll, as there are a few reasons why his return to St James Park should raise some eyebrows. Firstly, Carroll’s injury record is a massive red flag. The 30-year-old has struggled for many seasons with injury problems, his injury profile on Transfermarkt takes up two pages, and you just don’t know how many games he is going to be able to manage a season. Carroll only featured a total of 14 times for West Ham in his 2018/19 campaign, and only completed 90 minutes on one occasion. So it’s fair to say that on paper, it’s hard to understand why the Magpies have taken a risk on an injury-prone player. Another reason why Goldstein is likely baffled, is Carroll’s recent goal record isn’t reassuring. The 30-year-old only managed one goal in 14 outings last season, his only goal came against Birmingham City in the FA Cup, and that doesn’t suggest he is capable of firing Bruce’s team to glory. However, given that Carroll previously shone bright at St James Park, he scored 33 goals in 90 outings, and is a local lad then you feel that if he is ever going to get back to his best, then he’ll be able to do that at the Magpies.
