Gayle update is a worry

Steve Bruce provided a worrying injury update on injured Newcastle United attacker Dwight Gayle as he claimed he didn’t seem to be getting any better.

The Magpies forward is yet to feature this season due to injury and it seems that a return date can’t be pencilled in for him as Bruce didn’t have any positive news regarding him on Friday.

“Dwight Gayle ‘doesn’t seem to be getting any better’ and saw a specialist yesterday,” said Bruce in his press conference ahead of the clash v Watford, as quoted by the Chronicle’s Live Blog (9:07am).

The worrying update on Gayle surely felt like a sucker punch to Bruce as the Magpies boss would doubt to love to utilise him sooner rather than later, also he probably felt the player’s return was near.

After all, The Chronicle on August 22nd reported that while Gayle had flown to Spain in order to see a specialist over his niggling muscle problem, it appeared as if he would recover without the need for any further treatment as his injury was healing.

Yet Bruce’s update implies that Gayle’s injury isn’t healing, which implies that further action may be needed in order to get him back to 100%.

This means Gayle not being available has come a bit out of nowhere for the Magpies boss.

Also seeing as Chronicle journalist Mark Douglas previously claimed Bruce was “desperate” to utilise the Magpies’ No.9 in an article for the newspaper, the Newcastle boss will be disappointed by this set-back as he clearly believes Gayle could have made a difference to his side.

This is apparently the case even though Gayle, who earns £40,000-a-week (Source: Spotrac), has a less than convincing record in the Premier League.

The attacker has only managed 21 goals in 99 Premier League appearances, averaging a very low 0.21 goals per game, and it’s not like he contributes goals in other ways as he has only ever managed to create four big chances in his top-flight outings. (Source: Premier League)

However giving that Bruce’s current attacking options are Joelinton, a player still settling into the Premier League, Yoshinori Muto, a player who has managed only two goals in 21 outings for the club and Andy Carroll, a player with his own injury problems, then you can see why the Magpies boss was likely hoping to call upon Gayle soon.

Yet sadly it doesn’t seem like he’ll be able to.
