Chopra unimpressed with Joelinton

Michael Chopra blasted Newcastle United attacker Joelinton by questioning whether he was capable of scoring lots of goals for the club.

The former Magpies forward was asked by Sam Allardyce if the Magpies’ summer signings were better than the players who had left, and Chopra said no then proceeded to focus his attention on the Brazilian forward.

Chopra explained that Joelinton didn’t look like a £40million player and that he was expecting more from the 23-year-old than he has shown so far due to his price tag.

“Nah, I think you look at Joelinton coming into the team for £40million, you’re expecting better than what he has given so far on the evidence of what we’ve seen,” said Chopra on talkSPORT (7:44am, Tuesday August 20th).

“How do you replace Rondon who was somebody who was £16million and a bargain? Obviously the other boy Saint-Maximin he is injured so we don’t know what he is about.

“But from the evidence so far on Joelinton, he doesn’t really look like a player who is going to score a lot of goals for Newcastle.”

A player’s price isn’t a reflection of a player’s quality and Chopra should be aware of that. The former Magpies attacker seems all ready to write off Joelinton’s chances of being regarded as a good signing, but it’s worth noting the Magpies are only two games into the new season. Steve Bruce clearly hasn’t seen the best of Joelinton yet, but that doesn’t mean he won’t end up seeing the attacker excel at St James Park. The 23-year-old had never played in England before arriving at the Magpies, so he is going to need time to adjust to the Premier League. Joelinton may have been disappointing against Norwich on Saturday, he averaged a rating of 5.94 and missed a golden opportunity to score (Source: WhoScored), but name a Magpies player who wasn’t? Arguably the only Newcastle player that stood out for the right reasons was Isaac Hayden, even though it was Jonjo Shelvey who grabbed the consolation goal, and even then he wasn’t spectacular.
