Sam Allardyce shared that the Newcastle United fans planning to boycott will soon return to St James Park if Steve Bruce’s side start winning as they’ll miss attending games too much.

Allardyce was discussing the Magpies’ fanbase with Alan Brazil and the talkSPORT host proceeded to tell him about the proposed fan boycott of the club, and how two or three weeks ago, there was meant to be 12,000 seats not sold for the clash against Arsenal.

The former Magpies boss responded to what Brazil told him, in order to reveal he thought supporters would likely end up swallowing their pride and attending games if Bruce got off to a good start.

“If they start winning and Brucey gets off to a good start, they’ll miss it so much that they will come back, swallow their pride if you like and go and support the club,” said Allardyce on talkSPORT (Wednesday, 7:55am, August 7th).

OPINION

Allardyce didn’t seem surprised about a boycott potentially occurring, and he didn’t rule out that one would happen. However, the former Magpies boss seemed confident that if Newcastle rack up the wins in their opening games of the season, supporters will end up returning. He believes this even though The Magpie Group released a statement, as relayed by the Chronicle, that they are ready to dig in for the “long haul” in their battle with the Magpies’ ownership. The supporter group, who are one of 10 groups, are calling for St James Park to be boycotted for as long as Mike Ashley is owner, and that means they have no plans to return regardless if Bruce guides the Magpies to success. Given that there has been a lot of discontent towards Ashley for many years now, Allardyce shouldn’t be so confident to suggest that positive results will lure Newcastle fans back to the club. Newcastle supporters aren’t protesting against poor results, after all, their upset due to the way Ashley runs the club. A win against Arsenal doesn’t change the view on Ashley’s ownership.
