Sky Sports football expert Tim Vickery heaped praise on Newcastle United attacker Joelinton after the forward’s display in the 1-0 win against Tottenham.

Vickery, who provides updates on Sky Sports regarding everything South American football,  watched Joelinton perform against Tottenham on Sunday and was impressed not just by his goal but by the way he led the line.

The football expert added that he has always liked Joelinton, though hinted he thought Newcastle paid over the odds for him, and admitted he had hopes for him.

“I thought Joelinton was terrific, not just the goal he scored, but the way he led the line,” said Vickery on talkSPORT (15:26, Wednesday, August 28th).

“Lots of lovely fluid movement as well, two good feet, I’ve always liked him on the way up, but I think Newcastle paid a lot for him…but he is a player I have hopes for.”

OPINION

Vickery has seen more than his fair share of Brazilian players in action and for him to be gushing about Joelinton, while also suggesting that he envisions a bright future for the attacker, is a very good sign for Newcastle. The football expert doesn’t just heap praise on any old player after all. It’s also easy to see why he was so impressed by Joelinton on Sunday, as the 23-year-old pretty much ticked every box. Joelinton was not only clinical in front of goal, he scored despite only having two shots (Source: WhoScored) but his all-round play was impressive. The attacker made two key passes against Spurs, covered a lot of ground in order to touch the ball 40 times and won two of his aerial duels in order to hold onto the ball. Given that Joelinton never played in England ahead of joining the Magpies from Hoffenheim in the summer, it’s nice to see that he has already been able to show glimpses of his potential. While Steve Bruce needs the 23-year-old to get up to speed as quick as possible, due to not having too many forward options to choose from, it is asking a lot for Joelinton to be able to regularly deliver the goods in the Premier League in the coming weeks.
