COMMENTARY

Newcastle United’s U-23s lost 6-0 to Reading’s U-23s on Monday in their opening Premier League 2 fixture of the season, and many Toon supporters fumed on social media. While the result was a little misleading, the Magpies were reduced to 10-men in the 72nd minute after Owen Bailey was sent off, it was still an embarrassing result to read on paper. This view was shared by a few Newcastle fans on social media as one Toon supporter directly called the loss embarrassing, while another questioned if the club were serious. Newcastle struggled throughout the game, they were 3-0 down at half-time, and it’s clear Reading’s highly-rated academy is well thought of for a reason. Neil Redfearn was appointed as manager of Newcastle’s U-23s side earlier in the summer, and it’s clear that he hasn’t achieved the ideal start. Several Magpies fans directed their anger over the result at the 54-year-old, with some calling for his head.
