COMMENTARY

The Sun reported on Sunday that Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce wanted to bring Aston Villa fullback Ahmed Elmohamady to St James Park. The newspaper claimed that the Magpies boss was ready to fight with Toon chiefs in order to be able to sign the 31-year-old from Villa, as the transfer team would prefer to sign someone younger. While normally you would struggle to find Magpies fans agreeing with the club’s transfer policy, that’s exactly what happened on social media when this report came to light. One Newcastle fan claimed that Elmohamady was poor at best while another stated that they would rather play Magpies youngster Jamie Sterry rather than the Eqyptian as the Aston Villa player was shocking. Bruce knows Elmohamady very well as he has previously managed him at Sunderland, Hull City and Villa. One Magpies fan even cheekily claimed that Bruce couldn’t work without him. It’s easy to see why many Newcastle fans below were dismayed as Elmohamady has spent his last two seasons in the Championship, and there’s clearly a reason for that. The right-back scored two goals, while assisting seven, in his 41 league outings last season and it’s hard to imagine him racking up similar numbers in a harder division.
