The talkSPORT reporter stated that while he envisioned Townsend returning to the Magpies at the beginning of the transfer window, that deal wasn’t likely to happen anymore as the 28-year-old won’t leave Palace before the deadline.
“At the beginning of the window if you had asked me, who was going to leave Palace, I would of gone the other side of the wing,” said Abrahams on talkSPORT (17:12, Wednesday, August 7th, 17:13).
“And gone for Andros Townsend to leave and maybe go back to Newcastle, that was what I was hearing.
“But that hasn’t happened, he won’t leave.”
Given Abrahams claimed that Newcastle were potentially a possible option for Townsend at the start of the window, many Newcastle United fans will surely be thinking what if.
After all, it was unlikely the Magpies had the option to get deals struck earlier in the window, as they didn’t have a manager in place.
However if perhaps Benitez had stayed or his future had been decided earlier, to see Bruce arrive quicker, who knows Townsend could have been a realistic option to target.
After all, you feel Palace may have at least considered letting the 28-year-old go earlier in the window, as they would have had time to get a replacement, and you feel they may have considered it if they weren’t having to deal with another winger, Wilfried Zaha, handing in a transfer request (Source: Sky Sports).
Townsend would have been a fantastic signing for Newcastle to make as he is a Premier League proven player capable of being a creative threat.
The right-winger, scored nine goals while assisting six last season, averaging a goal every 396 minutes to be Palace’s third-highest scorer (Source: BBC), and would clearly be like a man on a mission upon returning to St James Park.
After all, Townsend likely feels he has unfinished business at St James as while he did impress in his previous stint at the club, he scored four goals while assisting two in 13 outings, his spell was so short as the Magpies suffered relegation.
Also given that the 28-year-old is known for constantly firing crosses in the box, he made 161 last season in the league (Source: Premier League), he could have constantly provided enough chances for Newcastle’s front-line to fire home.
However, based on Abraham’s remarks and the situation at Palace, Townsend’s chances of arriving before the window slams shut are very slim.
