Stan Collymore took a cheeky dig at Steve Bruce while delivering his verdict on Newcastle United’s 3-1 loss to Norwich City.

The pundit cheekily referred to Bruce as being the Magpies’ 6000th choice for the manager and suggested that the Magpies players may not have brought into his regime if their poor performance on Saturday was due to a lack of effort.

“Now if there’s a lack of effort this early on in the season at Newcastle United, is it fair to say that we might be saying adios to Steve Bruce and the dressing room have downed tools already, in other words, they may not have brought into the 6000th choice for Newcastle United manager,” said Collymore on his podcast (The Last Word with Stan Collymore on podfollow.com, 28mins).

“I’m sure he wasn’t the first choice.”

Collymore then continued on later in his podcast about Newcastle’s loss to Norwich and shared they needed to be more prolific in front of goal if they’re going to get points away from home.

“Newcastle had twelve shots at Carrow Road, and four on target, so a third of their shots need to be a lot more prolific if they’re going to get points particularly on away days” added Collymore (30mins).

OPINION

Collymore isn’t confident that Newcastle’s loss to Norwich was a result of the team downing tools, but he certainly didn’t ignore using that idea to take a dig at Bruce. While the Magpies boss isn’t having the best time at St James Park currently, he has lost the Magpies’ opening two league games, after all, Collymore didn’t have to point out that he wasn’t likely the first-choice to replace Rafa Benitez at the club. After all now that Bruce has been appointed, it’s kind of irrelevant who the Magpies would have rather hired. As for Collymore’s remarks on Newcastle not being prolific in front of goal, he’s spot on. The Magpies created enough space to have 12 shots at goal, and they only managed to hit the back of the net once through Jonjo Shelvey. You feel that Collymore’s criticism about the Magpies not making the most of their chances should be aimed at Joelinton and Matt Ritchie. After all, the Brazilian had two opportunities on goal, one he definitely should have scored from, and Ritchie was responsible for three of the Magpies’ efforts on goal (Source: WhoScored).
