Chris Sutton has launched an attack on Newcastle United after they fell to a 3-1 defeat against Norwich City on Saturday.

The BBC pundit was not impressed with the Magpies and stated that Steve Bruce’s side looked like they would be in the relegation battle this season after only two games of the campaign.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Sutton labelled Newcastle “pathetic,” and claimed he would be worried if he was a supporter right now.

“I’d be worried if I was a Newcastle fan – they were pathetic today. They look like they’re going to be in a relegation battle,” he said.

Newcastle are winless under Bruce after they also lost their opener at St James’ Park against Arsenal, with his side failing to create many goalscoring opportunities in both games.

OPINION

Sutton is spot on with his verdict, Newcastle were definitely pathetic in their performance against Norwich. It is unacceptable to put in the level of performance that Bruce’s side did on Saturday and not expect a backlash. It would have been understandable if the Magpies turned up and Carrow Road and put everything into it and fall short, but to get dismantled the way they did by a newly-promoted side, and not offer anything in return – is pathetic. They have many questions to answer after this defeat, and if people thought there were encourage signs in defeat against Arsenal, they have certainly been blown out of the water by now. Newcastle lacked ideas throughout the entire game, and Bruce’s system certainly didn’t help, with Isaac Hayden being forced into a wider role leaving a real gap in the heart of midfield. Bruce and Newcastle need to bounce back quickly and start to rack up points or they will definitely be facing the relegation battle that Sutton has predicted.
