Graeme Souness has blasted Tottenham left-back Danny Rose after he failed to stop Joelinton from scoring Newcastle United’s winner at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

Joelinton bagged his first goal in English football in the first half after he was played in by a clever pass from Christian Atsu.

Rose failed to pick up the Brazilian striker before he slotted the ball past Hugo Lloris and speaking at half-time, Souness pointed out the England international as being at fault for the goal.

“What is Danny Rose thinking now? The alarm bells have got to be ringing in his head there to get closer,” said Souness on Sky Sports Premier League on Sunday [05:23pm].

“When he sees Sanchez lose his man and come all the way in. He’s only a yard away from getting a block on here. If he had taken two strides in to think ‘Sanchez has lost his striker, I must get closer to him’, he gets a block on that shot.”

OPINION

Rose had a shocker against Newcastle. Miguel Almiron was running circles around him at one point and all the Spurs left-back could do was give away fouls. Souness is right to single out Rose for Joelinton’s goal but Davinson Sanchez should have also done a lot better to keep the Brazilian striker from getting a shot off at goal. As Souness says though, Rose should have anticipated the problem and got back to help out. It will be interesting to see how Mauricio Pochettino responds to that performance by Rose because Ben Davies came on for the former Leeds left-back towards the end of the second half. Tottenham did well to get a point at Manchester City last week but they are yet to really impress in the Premier League this season and show that they are serious top-four contenders. Pochettino might need to ring the changes to this side next week.
