Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle flew out to Barcelona to see a specialist in an effort to return to fitness sooner, according to the Chronicle (14.09).

The 28-year-old hitman has yet to feature for the Magpies so far this term after picking up a muscle issue in preseason.

But it is understood that upon gaining a second opinion from a Spanish professional, Gayle should not require any further treatment and his injury should heal of its own accord.

OPINION

This is good news for the Toon Army. Gayle may have spent last season on loan at West Brom after being unfancied by Rafa Benitez, but he could still have a big part to play for Steve Bruce’s side. Their first two matches have brought just the one goal, a consolation in the 3-1 defeat to Norwich City, but more worrying than that has been a general lack of ruthlessness in front of goal. Joelinton missed a glorious chances against the Canaries, while Yoshinori Muto was borderline invisible when he came on for a 22 minute cameo. Gayle may not be the ideal Premier League striker, but he is certainly lethal. The hitman registered 2.4 shots on target per match in the Championship last season, as per Whoscored, with just 0.8 of those attempts being registered as off target. If he can replicate that kind of form this term, then the Magpies might have a fighting chance of staying in the division.
