From England international and riding high at Liverpool, the past few years will not have pleased Jonjo Shelvey at Newcastle United.

Competition for places will always be high when playing in any Premier League side, but the 27-year-old would surely be expecting to force his way into the Magpies’ starting XI this season.

Things weren’t easy under Rafael Benitez for Shelvey, as he only made 10 starts for Newcastle last season – with a further six appearances coming off the bench.

Shelvey surely would have been delighted when Steve Bruce arrived at the club, a so-called old fashioned manager who would more than likely want the former Liverpool man to sit in the heart of midfield and dictate possession.

That was the case at first in a midfield three, with the 27-year-old sitting in the middle for the first two games of the season. But, after defeat in both of those matches, Shelvey was dropped for the game against Spurs – a game Bruce picked up his first three points in.

Despite being dropped at an early stage, Shelvey admitted to the Guardian that the wouldn’t put himself back into the side for Saturday’s game against Watford if he was the manager.

On top of that, the 27-year-old also revealed to the Chronicle that he wants to sign a new deal with the club soon to secure his future in the North East.

“Obviously, I want to sign a new contract,” he said.

“I’ve never once come out and said that I wanted to leave the club. I don’t want to leave the club.”

Newcastle and Bruce should not think twice and offer Shelvey a new contract at St James’ Park, and secure one of their top talents at the club.

Shelvey has a great passing range and his experience, he has featured 187 times in the Premier League, could be so beneficial to young midfielders such as Sean and Matty Longstaff as they both look to continue their run in the senior set-up.

The 6ft midfielder [Transfermarkt] has impressed this season, scoring his first goal already, as well as averaging 1.5 shots and key passes per game, on top of completing 1.5 dribbles, according to WhoScored.

Newcastle should not think twice about offering Shelvey a new deal after his recent statement regarding his future at the club.
