Allan Saint-Maximin is likely to be on the bench for Newcastle United’s trip to face Norwich City on Saturday, according to Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards.

The French winger started last Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal on the bench, but looked bright in his 23 minutes cameo appearance.

The 22-year-old looks set to miss out on a first Toon start against the Canaries, however, with Edwards stating that he likely to be assessed on Saturday morning.

OPINION

This will be a real blow for Newcastle. Saint-Maximin is yet to start a game for the Magpies, but he has consistently looked bright when he has featured, and if his statistics from last season are anything to go by, he has an awful lot to offer the Toon Army. The wide man completed an average of 4.2 dribbles, as well as having 2.2 shots on goal and completing 1.7 key passes, as per Whoscored. Even in his brief appearance against the Gunners he managed two dribbles and a shot. Ultimately, what he brings is the unexpected creativity of the supremely talented. Saint-Maximin is the kind of player who can make magic out of thin air, and taking that kind of player away from a starting lineup will always put them at a disadvantage. Hopefully he can still feature in some capacity against the Canaries, but if he is to miss out then there will be a sizeable void to fill in Steve Bruce’s plans for definite.
