Newcastle United are expected to make their next signing within 48 hours, according to the Daily Express.

The newspaper claims that having already wrapped up the club record signing of attacker Joelinton from Hoffenheim, another deal is likely to be completed in the coming days.

It’s thought that one deal, of which there is likely to be more than one, is all but done and should be secured by Saturday night at the latest.

OPINION

Well, this is exciting news for fans of the north east giants, isn’t it? Clearly there are still several holes in this Newcastle squad that need to be filled over the last week and a bit before the transfer window shuts. Joelinton’s arrival didn’t fix the superfluous problems with this current iteration of the Magpies. Additions are needed at both full back positions, in central midfield, out wide and in attack alongside the Brazilian. When you look at it like that, at least four new signings are still needed to get this squad to a position where some small progress can be hoped for from last season. You’d assume that the team is going to be slightly worse off tactically after Rafael Benitez’s departure, and so it’s imperative that Steve Bruce is able to get more talent into the building. Getting one deal wrapped up in the next 48 hours is a good place to start, but work needs to continue right until the last minute if Newcastle are to survive in the Premier League next time round.
