OGC Nice goalkeeper Walter Benitez is keen on a switch to the Premier League this summer amid interest from Newcastle United, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claims that Crystal Palace and Wolves are also in the hunt to sign the 26-year-old shot-stopper, who kept an impressive 16 clean sheets in 35 Ligue 1 appearances last season for Nice.

Newcastle have already been shopping at the French club this summer after it was confirmed on Friday that Allan Saint-Maximin has left Patrick Viera’s side to join the Magpies in the North-East.

OPINION

As one Benitez goes, could another arrive at St James’ Park this summer? It seems unlikely. Newcastle may be keen on the Argentine goalkeeper but they do not really need to add another shot-stopper to their ranks. Freddie Woodman has joined Swansea on loan but Steve Bruce still has Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot to choose from ahead of the start of the upcoming season. If Dubravka goes then yes, signing Benitez from Nice might be a good idea because he was very impressive for Vieira’s side last term. As reported by the Sun, Benitez saved over 80 per cent of the shots he faced for Nice, which is better than what Liverpool’s Alisson and Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak managed. Not many people had heard of the Argentine before last season so it will be interesting to see whether or not he can maintain his form, whether it’s at Nice or in the Premier League.
