Newcastle United had scouts in Portugal on Thursday night to watch Norwegian youth international Tobias Borkeeiet, according to Scouts in Attendance.

The 20-year-old midfielder was representing Brondby as they recorded a 3-1 defeat in Europa League qualifying against Braga.

The 6’2″ youngster [Transfemarkt] signed for his current from Stabaek in July, but is already attracting attention from the Premier League, with scouts from Chelsea, Southampton, and both Manchester sides also in attendance.

OPINION

This could be a very interesting one to keep tabs on. Borkeeiet is on a steep trajectory, and after having only signed for Brondby earlier this summer, he is already making big enough waves to justify major interest in him. At 6’2″, he is an impressive physical presence in the centre of the park, and is more than equipped to handle the rigours of the English game. The young Norwegian is also very versatile, and is more than capable of playing in the heart of defence too. Whether anything ever comes of this remains to be seen, of course, but at the very least, it is pleasing to see the Toon Army thinking outside the box a little bit and trying to snag themselves a bargain for the future. Borkeeiet joined Brondby for just over £1 million this year, and while his stock has no doubt risen since then, he would still be a very affordable, and potentially very astute, piece of business.
