OPINION
Newcastle United may have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night but there were certainly positives to take from the penalty shoot-out defeat to Leicester at St James’ Park. One of those positives was that Matty Longstaff made his debut and managed to impress some fans with his display against what was basically a full-strength Leicester side. It is good that these supporters are being quite optimistic after the loss. Usually you would expect a complete meltdown and cries of ‘Bruce out’ but this time there is a lot of good to say about the match. Longstaff, 19, has a long way to go to become a first-team regular for Newcastle. He is not as his brother’s level just yet but Sean is two years older and has been a first-team regular since the start of this year. Matty can get to that point if Bruce keeps showing faith in him. Newcastle fans will no doubt give credit to Bruce if he is able to nurture the young midfielder into a first team star.

Look at the bright side, Matty Longstaff got his first start and Muto finally scored another goal. The evening is not a complete write off. #nufc

Unlucky. We did our best and ran a very strong Leicester close.
Willems and Longstaff sounded impressive.Sidenote, I'd probably have Schar on penalties from now on
