Newcastle United are interested in signing young Inter Milan centre forward Facundo Colidio, according to FC Inter News.

The Italian outlet claims that the Magpies are battling northern side Leeds United for the 19-year-old, with Whites boss Marcelo Bielsa said to be ‘loco’ for him.

It’s thought that the Serie A heavyweights value the youngster at around £9million, and they haven’t ruled out selling him before the transfer deadline.

Indeed, direct talks between both Leeds and Newcastle and Inter over the potential signing of the attacker are set to take place imminently.

OPINION

It’s been clear throughout this summer that Newcastle have needed to secure attacking reinforcements. They lost three frontmen in Salomon Rondon, Ayoze Perez and Joselu, and so far only Joelinton has arrived to strengthen the sharp end of the pitch. The Brazilian is a nice start, but he is only that. Steve Bruce needs to ensure that he provides the former Hoffenheim man with some competition and support up front. Could Colidio provide that? Well, that’s a lot of responsibility to put on a young man who is yet to play a minute of first team football for Inter. His record for Inter’s reserve team is solid but not spectacular at 16 goals in 55 games, while the five in eight for the team’s Under-19s side is more impressive [Source: Transfermarkt]. Look, we know Bielsa is a good judge of talent and so if he fancies the player it’s probably a pretty good sign. However, it’s unlikely that an unproven teenager is what Newcastle need in attack right now.
