Newcastle United are closing in on the signing of Paris Saint-Germain defender Moussa Sissako, according to RMC Sport.

The French news outlet claim that the Magpies have been tracking the 18-year-old for several weeks, with the club having held discussions with the defender.

RMC Sport report on their live transfer blog (01/08 17:06 pm) that Newcastle have entered talks surrounding a four-year deal with the player and the fee negotiated with the Ligue 1 giants has yet to be released.

The young Malian defender has yet to make a senior appearance for the French club, featured in their B side last season, making four appearances in the UEFA Youth League.

OPINION

This most likely wasn’t the Paris Saint-Germain defender that Newcastle were expecting through the door at St James’ Park, with the Magpies being reported by the Chronicle to be given 24 hours to secure a deal with Sissako’s teammate, left-back Stanley N’Soki. The 18-year-old is relatively unknown and hasn’t made the step up to the senior side which could mean one of many things – either he isn’t good enough to make that leap as of yet or with defenders such as Thiago Silva and Marquinhos at the club, the chance hasn’t yet produced itself for Sissako. Newcastle fans will be hoping it is the latter, but in all honesty, it is hard to see Sissako even getting a game in the senior side in the North East, never mind Paris Saint-Germain. With Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark, and Florian Lejeune still at the club, this could more than likely be an addition to strengthen the academy, but to also be on standby should he be required in the first-team. Either way, Newcastle surely need better in the last two weeks of the window.
