Yoshinori Muto and Federico Fernandez could both earn their first starts of the season when Newcastle United play against Leicester in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claimed via their live blog on Monday [05:15pm] that Muto and Fernandez may replace Joelinton and Jamaal Lascelles in the starting line-up after Steve Bruce admitted that those two players are doubts for the midweek showdown at St James’ Park.

Muto and Fernandez came off the bench in the 1-0 win against Tottenham on Sunday but could be set for stating roles this week.

OPINION

Newcastle have not really pushed on in the cup competitions in the last few years and having to play against Leicester, when there are still lower-league opposition in the Carabao Cup, is a bit of a blow. However the Magpies are at home and there is a good chance that Brendan Rodgers will see this game as one where he can rest his key players. It seems like Bruce does not have a choice about resting Joelinton and Lascelles, who were both fantastic for Newcastle in their shock 1-0 win against Tottenham on Sunday. Muto and Fernandez may be a bit rusty as neither have started games yet this season but as mentioned, Leicester could also have players like them who are in their starting line-up for the first time in the new campaign. Muto has a lot to prove. The Japan international has scored just one goal in 20 appearances since joining Newcastle from Mainz last summer. Hopefully he can double his account for the Toon this week.
