According to one of the UK’s leading bookies, punters have been piling money on Newcastle to be relegated this week.

The spokesman for the leading bookmaker was talking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show (talkSPORT, Wednesday, 8.30am), when he was asked about where the money was going in the Premier League relegation market.

“Most of the money this week has come in for Newcastle,” the spokesman said.

“Really? Wow,” replied Brazil in surprise.

Newcastle are currently favourites for the drop, followed by the three newly-promoted sides, Sheffield United, Norwich and Aston Villa

This shouldn’t really come as a massive surprise. Newcastle have lost their first two games under Steve Bruce and he’s under massive pressure at the club. He’s also the favourite to be the first Premier League manager to get the sack this season. It’s almost like all the predictions that Newcastle fans had when Bruce was announced as their new manager are going to come true. There’s a real sense of pessimism at the club at the moment and the fans are now going to be split between those who will get behind the club in a bid to push them on and those who just want Bruce out. It’s tough to see Bruce getting anything out of the game against Tottenham on Sunday which will likely see Newcastle still rooted in the bottom three of the league. Bruce was Ashley’s choice, though, and he’s not likely to admit he was wrong quickly.
