Newcastle Chronicle football editor Mark Douglas has labelled Danny Mills an “idiot” after the Sky Sports pundit slammed Miguel Almiron for his performances in a Newcastle United shirt.
In an interview for Football Insider, Mills claimed that the Paraguay international “flattered to deceive” for Newcastle last season and was also critical of his refusal to get forward and into the box in recent defeats against Arsenal and Norwich.
Douglas clearly does not agree with Mills after the ex-England international’s comments were brought up in the Everything is Black and White podcast.
“Danny Mills is an idiot,” he said when host Andrew Musgrove mentioned Mills’ interview [24m 01s]. “I’m not bothered about what Danny Mills says.”
OPINION
Almiron may be good at using his pace and dribbling ability to drive his team forward but the former Atlanta United attacker is yet to register a goal or assist in England since joining Newcastle in January, so Mills’ claim about the Paraguayan flattering to deceive may be right. Whether you usually disagree with Mills or not, it would be daft to ignore his interview about Almiron because what he says rings true. Almiron came to Newcastle in January amid a lot of hype. Rafa Benitez wanted him and Newcastle paid around £20millin to get the deal done. Almiron simply had to perform to justify that transfer fee, but in 12 appearances for the Magpies, the 25-year-old simply hasn’t produced. In his two outings this season against Arsenal and Norwich, Almiron has made just one key pass, three successful dribbles and made seven poor touches that have led to him losing possession. He needs to step up but unfortunately, Steve Bruce might not be the manager to get the best out of him.
