Premier League heavyweights Manchester United are likely to spend £70million to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff next summer, according to The Daily Mail.
The newspaper claims that the Red Devils could have got the 21-year-old for just £20million this summer, but that negotiations ultimately failed.
As a result, Ed Woodward and co. are expected to have to spend £50million more in a year’s time to finally bring the Englishman to Old Trafford.

If United were left bamboozled by the amount of money Newcastle were demanding for Longstaff this summer after just a handful of Premier League games, imagine the figure they’ll want in a year’s time after a full season of regular first team football. It’s no surprise that it would take about £70million for the Red Devils to get their man in 12 month’s time. At the end of the day, the Manchester giants could have got a deal done for Longstaff this summer if they really wanted to. They have the cash, we’ve seen that with the Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire deals. However, they balked at the money the Magpies wanted and decided against a move. That’s why it seems slightly fanciful for The Mail to claim that United could have got the Newcastle star for just £20million this summer. How could that have been the case, when by all accounts the Magpies wanted £50million for him? Either way, Steve Bruce’s side look set to get a big windfall from Longstaff’s sale at some point in the future.
