Leeds United will not be signing Dwight Gayle from Newcastle United this summer, according to Athletic journalist Phil Hay.
The former Yorkshire Evening Post reporter claimed via a Q&A session on the Athletic website on Monday that Gayle, 28, will not be heading to Elland Road despite the Telegraph claiming that the ex-Crystal Palace striker is wanted by the Whites.
Hay was asked in the Q&A if he could put an end to the speculation regarding Leeds and Gayle.
When asked if it’s all a load of rubbish, Hay said: “Yes, he won’t be signing.”
OPINION
Steve Bruce might want to keep hold of Dwight Gayle going into the new season as he is currently the most proven Premier League striker at the club. Joelinton is going to become Newcastle’s first-choice striker but he has never experienced English football before while Yoshinori Muto struggled in his debut campaign at St James’ Park last term. Gayle was in red-hot form while on loan at West Brom last season, scoring 24 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions. However Gayle has just 21 goals in 99 Premier League appearances, with just six of those goals coming in the black and white stripes of Newcastle. Leeds will miss a trick if they do not sign the 28-year-old but according to the Telegraph, both Stoke and West Brom want to sign him. If someone in the Championship does get Gayle, there’s no doubt their odds for promotion will be slashed.
