Newcastle United left back Achraf Lazaar is closing in on a loan move to Serie B side Cosenza, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Italian outlet claims that the 17-cap Moroccan international is all set for a return to the peninsula, where he previously starred for Palermo.

Their report states that the Italian side have finalised a deal to sign the Magpies flop, who will join Piero Braglia’s team on a temporary basis.

OPINION

This isn’t news that will upset any Newcastle fans. Lazaar seems like a decent guy and by all accounts he’s worked hard this summer to try and force his way into new head coach Steve Bruce’s plans. However, that’s clearly not happened and so he needs to go out and get regular football once again. His career has stalled ever since he joined Newcastle, essentially, and so he needs to make a big decision at some point. It doesn’t seem like any team has enough faith in him to sign him permanently, and so he’ll know he needs to impress in a loan spell if he’s to get a proper move away somewhere. This loan gives him a chance to do that, especially considering it’s at a lower level in Serie B. Look, Lazaar’s not a great player – certainly not Premier League standard – and he knows he’s not going to make it at St James’ Park. So this seems like the right move at the right time for a player who’s out of his depth on Tyneside.
