The Magpies have lost their opening two games of the new league season, and face a tricky visit from Tottenham on Saturday.
And Keown is not confident of their chances.
Writing in a column for the Daily Mail, he said: “At the start of the season, I was asked for my Premier League predictions and I said Newcastle would be relegated. So far, they don’ t look like proving me wrong.
“Alarm bells must be ringing at St James’ Park. They head to Tottenham this weekend and I doubt they’ll get anything out of that match.
You can’t help fearing that Keown is right on this one. The Magpies were pretty poor in their opening weekend defeat against Arsenal, but they didn’t embarrass themselves by any means, and in some respects, that match could be justifiably regarded as something of a free hit. But against Norwich lats weekend, a game Steve Bruce will have earmarked as very winnable, the Magpies were abject. 3-1 probably faltered them a little, and the amount fo regression they showed against newly-promoted opposition will be enough to have the new boss sweating profusely. The Toon Army had 12 shots last Saturday, but aside from their late consolation and a dreadful miss from Joelinton, they never looked like scoring. More worryingly still, Teemu Pukki seemed to rip them to shreds at will. Both ends of the field need serious attention, and a game against the Champions League runners-up is no way to start the healing process.
