Newcastle United winger Matt Ritchie shared that he didn’t understand the unrest among Magpies fans as he stated the club had gone out and spent money.

The 29-year-old claimed that the club had to be real, as competing at the top of the Premier League costs mega-money and that Newcastle are competing with the teams around them.

Ritchie added that in his opinion Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has been honest in interviews about it costing a lot of money to compete at the top end of the table.

“I don’t understand the unrest, I’ve got to be honest, the club has gone out, spent money, we’re pushing, we’re trying to compete with teams we can compete with,” said Ritchie on talkSPORT (6:06am, Wednesday, August 7th).

“We’ve got to be real, to compete at the top of the Premier League now is mega mega money, and the owner has been honest in his interviews and personally said that.”

OPINION

Ritchie is not going to be popular among Newcastle fans and he basically says they have no reason to be upset with Ashley in his opinion. The 29-year-old seems to imply Newcastle supporters are upset because their side are not competing for the Premier League title or a place in Europe, but that’s not the issue. Newcastle fans know their team are more likely to be battling relegation than the title, and just want Ashley to invest a fair amount of money into helping the club kick on. Ritchie claims the Magpies have gone out and spent money, which they have to a degree this summer, but in recent windows, they haven’t done enough. In the current window, the Magpies broke their transfer record on signing Joelinton, he costs £40million (Source: BBC), spent £16.5million on Allan Saint-Maximin, recruited Jetro Williams on loan and scooped up free agents Kyle Scott as well as Jake Turner. Yet when you consider the Magpies sold Ayoze Perez, last season’s top-scorer, to Leicester City, for £30million, it’s not like Ashley has delved too deep into the club’s finances to welcome new signings (Source: Mirror).
